Second Life Fashion from ReadMeri | Off Centre

Off Centre

It’s midweek but I’m off-centre. So, some of you may have noticed I’ve taken recently to wearing a mesh head. It’s not something I was sure about doing because I think your own ‘identity’ is important and I didn’t want to look like everybody else. However, there are some big advantages to having a mesh head for people like me who take pics all the time – it really does cut down on the amount of time I spend in PS.

For this reason I never blog my skin or make-ups (unless they are make-ups I don’t wear on an every day basis and have been given for review) because I like people to look like themselves.

But I did it, I like it (I do miss old Meri-face too sometimes though) and then this happened…

Yes, Thom is staging a dirty protest at my new head, in the form of Frank Sidebottom.

So, I thought you might be able to help me out. I’d like to know how you feel about the mesh head, if you preferred my old head, if you prefer the new head. I’ve made a wee poll for you to do just that with no hassle, or if you want you can leave a comment on the blog. Thanks in advance of your consideration 🙂

In the pics below (which you can see larger by clicking on them) the mesh head is on the left and my normal head on the right.

What to wear in Second Life today?

Visit | West of the Rain
Pose | Grafica Cyfrol iii (Men Only Monthly, 20 Aug – 15 Sep)
Bag | REIGN. Summer Lovin Totes Set 4 modified hold (Reign Mainstore)
Tops | Addams Jan & Simona Combination [Mait/2Sli/3Bell/TMP] (Addams Mainstore : Addams Marketplace)
Rings | [Z O O M] Munnsy Rings [Mait/2Sli/Modify] (Fetish Fair, 19 Aug – 2 Sep)
Glasses | [Z O O M] Waaho Wood Glasses (Men Only Monthly, 20 Aug – 15 Sep)
Hair | tram. F603 Hair (Tram Mainstore)
Shoes | REIGN. Rome Lace Up Heels [Mait/Sli/Bell] (Reign Mainstore)
Jeans | Blueberry Melanie Jeans [Mait/2Sli/3Bell/TMP] (Blueberry Mainstore : Blueberry Marketplace)

Every so often you get a couple of items come out at the same time that feel ‘made for each other’ and this Jan & Simona Combo top set from Addams feels like it was pre-destined for Blueberry’s new Melanie jeans. Of course, in a strange twist, the Reign Rome Lace Up Boots were in fact made to go with the Melanie jeans, so we have a meant to be link-up, which is fabulous. They’re all mainstore releases and available right now.

Zoom’S Munnsy Rings come in Black, Brass, Gold and Silver and you can mix it up per ring, not just per set. There are options to fit Maitreya and 2 of the Slink hands, or you can simply adjust the rings individually (and wear them individually) via the unrigged versions in  the pack.

My new favourite glasses are the [Z O O M] Waaho Wood Glasses which are a new release for Men Only Monthly. They’re so kooky, so fashionable, so light, so comfortable. I might wear them forever and ever.

Here’s some extra shots of today’s threads! Click to see them larger.

And finally, here’s the jigging for the rigging video – please don’t forget to vote on the poll! Thank youuu x

  1. Ok, so I voted for your regular head, which isn’t going to win since the mesh head is already ahead…heh…of the game.
It’s interesting that you should post about mesh bits as I recently had an encounter (involving them) that made me consider the impact of body shaming in SL. I mean, it happens in life so I guess it was inevitable that it would happen in a simulated version of life but when it happened to me (indirectly) the other day, I was uber pissed.

Now that there are mesh bodies and heads and I see all the fancy photos and expressions you can get when you wear those things I fully understand why people like them, I mean using expressions with your standard head can look pretty goofy at times. So for blogging and fashion photography I see the appeal. Not knocking mesh boobies and bums or the folks that sport them at all, I get it, I really do.

But what about those individuals without access or desire to wear all mesh? Where do we fit?
I have mesh hands and feet because; well the standard feet that our virtual God gave us are hideous. The hands I could live with but the feet, no sir. Sometimes I wear mesh clothes but sometimes I like to wear the old system clothing, or dare I say both at the same time.

I’m me, I want to look like Marge, not upgrade because I feel the pressure to look a certain way or keep up with the latest trend. However this is becoming increasingly difficult as the days go by.

I lazily blog for some stores, home décor and clothing mostly and I noticed recently that the clothing store I blog keeps sending out stuff that you need to wear with mesh bodies. It used to be a mix but now it’s all mesh body stuff, so I decided to just stand by until something with sizes was released. Of course the only thing that was released was a statement from the shop owner in group chat about how it’s all about appliers for mesh bodies because no one wears noob bodies anymore.
I was shocked and hurt, since I wear a noob body and for the first time since I joined SL, I felt like my avatar wasn’t good enough.

And this is becoming a trend, my favourite clothing store is no longer making items for regular bodies, just mesh ones and I see a few other places I frequent going that way too. So it looks like I’m going to be ugly and naked soon. I don’t know where everyone got the idea that we all wear, all mesh all the time?

I guess what I’m trying to get across is do you… if you want to look like Meri, wear your old head. If you want to be able to stick out your tongue and wink without looking like you have something in your eye then wear the mesh head. For me personally I like your old head, it was and is unique and I noticed right away that it had been switched to a mesh head which kind of disappointed me since the one thing I will say (that is negative) about the mesh bits is I see more and more “twins” walking around SL now. Not nearly as many originals about these days and let me tell you, your avatars head is unique.

At the end of the day it’s really up to you, I for one will keep reading your blog mesh head or no mesh head. Who knows maybe you could give us the best of both worlds and ditch the helmet on occasion so we can see old Meri back in action?

    1. Marge that was a fantastic comment, thank you SO much. You’ve kind of summed up some of the ways I feel. I mean… yes, I love my mesh body and I love the clothes I put on it, but I do feel that everybody shouldn’t have to be meshed up and indeed the same.

There is pressure on people to conform and it’s wrongity wrong!

I do miss my old face, one of my happiest moments was when a friend said she’d used google images to search for a particular hair and saw me immediately – recognised me in a sea of other pictures. I thought that was so great and I’d hate to lose that.

On the flip side, it is saving me time blending the mouth, sorting out my nostrils (god knows what’s wrong with my nostrils haha).

I like you Marge, thank you again xx

      1. Glad the comment was useful, it was very long, so good to know you didn’t fall asleep somewhere in the middle.

Your old face is awesome but I get the less post production nostril stuff, makes sense to be all meshy when you blog as much as you do.

Looking forward to a few posts with OrigiMeri but for now I’ll just have to enjoy MeshMeri. 😀
